Feldspar are rock-forming minerals that make up almost 60% of the Earth's crust. They are found in all rock types; such as granite, gneiss and basalt. Feldspar minerals are found in most igneous rocks.

Did you know that silicon is the most abundant element in the Earth, besides air? Silicon is found everywhere from sand and clay to water and even some plants and animals. It is the 8th most abundant element in the universe.

Silicon is a very easy rock to determine, it's shiny black/gray color lets it get recognized very easily.

Silicon is used in objects such as glass, concrete, brick, refractories, pottery and it is even used in jewelry.

Our 10 Stops - Stop # 9

Our ninth stop will be focusing on the dimension stone. Dimension stones are natural rocks that have been selected and cut to specific sizes and shapes. All of  igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks are used in creating dimension stones. Some common types of rock used to make dimension stones are granite, limestone, travertine and quartz-based stone.

Dimension stones are often used for kitchen counter-top slabs, bathroom vanities, tiles, tombstones and monuments.

Industrial sand & gravel pile.
Our last stop on this Virtual Tour will be to learn a little bit about industrial sand and gravel, which is pretty common in Georgia.

The sand and gravel that it produced here in Georgia is used either for construction or for industrial uses where the sand and gravel is used to make other materials.

I have found that industrial sand and gravel is sometimes used to make concrete, concrete blocks, glass, bricks and pipes. It is also sometimes used to make roof shingles, railroad parts, and water filtration.
